Steve Gander was born at a tender age in 1956 in the cultural desert of Middlesex, England. He spent some time there growing up and then left complaining that for a cultural desert there was a remarkable lack of sand. He took a series of jobs carefully selected not to catapult him up the career ladder. For shorter or even shorter periods of time he was a cook in a mental institution ('You'd have to be mad to eat my food'), a travel guide taking Americans to Russia - and bringing them back ('I got very positive feedback'), a sound engineer in Italy ('I just got feedback') and other things which are too interesting to mention here. He then became a specialist English language trainer in Vienna, Austria where he now lives but his courses such as 'Small Talk for Lavatory Attendants' and 'Negotiating Skills for Long-Distance Camel Drivers' failed to reach their target groups.

Turning to comedy, he at last got somebody to listen to him and since 2001 has been performing his one-man comedy show 'English as a Funny Language'.
